Once a quiet dhow-building village, Nungwi has evolved into the island's most popular beach destination — yet its traditional shipyard still operates on the shore. Sunsets here are legendary: the sky ignites over an unbroken ocean horizon while fishing dhows sail home. By night, beach bars come alive with live music and bonfires on the sand.
Nungwi sits at Zanzibar's northernmost tip, where powder-white sand meets turquoise water that barely changes with the tide.

June to October for the driest conditions and calmest seas. December to February is hot and sunny — ideal for swimming. Nungwi is one of the few beaches in Zanzibar where the tide has minimal impact on swimming.
What You'll See
Nungwi is the gateway to Mnemba Atoll — one of the Indian Ocean's premier snorkeling and diving sites with sea turtles, dolphins, reef sharks, and kaleidoscopic coral. The Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium rescues and rehabilitates sea turtles in a natural tidal lagoon.
Getting There
Nungwi is approximately 60 km (1 hour) from Zanzibar Airport and Stone Town by road. Private transfers are the most comfortable option. Public dalla-dalla minibuses run the route but are slow and crowded.
